InceptionChristopher Nolan combines the epic action of his Batman films with the multi-layered narrative of Memento to create a wholly original sci-fi noir thriller. The majority of negative critics insist that the movie is too hard to follow, and while it does require some investment on the part of the viewer, it’s also engrossing enough to draw you back in to see what you missed. Already one of the top-grossing films of the year, I expect this film to have a healthy life on DVD as well. The Twilight Saga: EclipseFor those expecting David Slade to bring a similar vampire aesthetic from his 30 Days of Night, Eclipse will likely be a disappointment. It’s much more indebted to the two Twilight films that came before it than any of Slade’s previous work. But the new director does bring some much-needed humor to the franchise, which ironically also makes it feel like a more serious piece of cinema. If the director and cast are in on the joke, shouldn’t you be as well?Iron Man 2The first film proved to Hollywood that superheroes don’t have to be dark, brooding, emotional headcasesthey can have some fun, too. That was largely thanks to Robert Downey, Jr.’s snarky performance, and it’s no surprise that he carries the sequel too. Unfortunately, the film does drag a little bit with the introduction of a few too many sub-plots, especially one with Samuel Jackson as Nick Fury that is practically a blatant advertisement for the upcoming Avengers film.
